Music
Music is central to Cothill life, with over 75% of pupils playing musical instruments. From bagpipes to bassoons, violins to marimbas, they enjoy learning, practising and performing, and the school maintains a reputation for producing musicians of the highest calibre, regularly winning music awards to senior schools. We also encourage our brightest and best to audition for junior music colleges in London.
Curriculum music is integral to the timetable and every child leaves Cothill with a strong understanding of music history and theory. In the 4s, they receive group tuition on violin and recorder. A unique offering comes in the 5s, where every pupils rotates round the full range of orchestral instruments in small group sessions - a number of Old Cothillians now play an instrument professionally that they started in these sessions.
Ensemble-playing reaches incredible heights and pupils are able to be in the Orchestra, Jazz Band, Brass Band, Guitar Group or one of three choirs. The Chapel Choir sings services every week and all the choirs combine for large school events. They also regularly tour within the UK and abroad.
There are regular recitals throughout the year and every pupil is encouraged to perform in at least one. We also have our very own rock festival - Rockhill - in the summer term which is one of the highlights of the year.
